Adam B Guide. If the water isn't contaminated and if they're cooked. That's what I figured but wanted to play safe. Lookin forward to learning bout wild edible greens in my area and makin a woodland feast in spring. I'm going to say no, they're not safe.
PA uses coal plants heavily. It's not just air pollution they're releasing. I wouldn't eat fish in PA rivers. That's just me. You may be alright. There are no coal mines where I'm at. Escalating the battle against rusty crayfish — an exotic, invasive species that has pushed out native crayfish species in large sections of the Susquehanna and Juniata rivers, and in other Pennsylvania waterways — the Pennsylvania Board of Fish and Boat Commissioners has restricted the movement of all crayfish within the state.
While licensed anglers continue to be allowed to take 50 crayfish per day, they may not move the crayfish away from the waters where they were collected unless the head has been removed behind the eyes on each of the crayfish. My young son brought it home from a neighborhood pond and we put it in my fish tank. He ate the frogs and other fish in 2 days. So, I pulled it out of the tank and put him in a large flat fishbowl on the kitchen counter.
I fed him different select meat chunks every morning when we turned the lights on. From that day forward, we made the crawfish climb on his rock, lean back, wave his legs, wave his claws, and ask for food.
My neighbor had a salt water tank and her octopus would beg for food. She had to relocate the tank into the kitchen because he was ruining the living room carpet.

They grow more quickly out of the smaller stages of their lives, when they are most vulnerable to predators like fish, and they tend to carry larger claws to defend themselves.
Combined with their replacing the native crayfish, the larger size earlier and the larger claws results in fewer crayfish for other predators to eat, even with more crayfish now inhabiting the stream. Across the state, four non-native crayfish species from outside Pennsylvania have been introduced into state waters and three species native to one part of Pennsylvania have been introduced to waters outside their natural range.
Commission staff plans to bring a proposal to the commissioners at their October meeting to ban all possession and transportation of any crayfish unless the head of the animal has been removed.
