Perception feels direct and immediate, as though we accurately perceive all the objects and surroundings out in the world. Yet this feeling is an illusion. Instead, perception involves a selective reconstruction of the world from the sensory input we receive, with certain features emphasized and others actively discounted.
In the case of human form vision, these computations involve the coordinated activity of neuronal populations spanning numerous cortical visual areas. Our work is centered on understanding the neurophysiological circuitry that underlies our form and object perception during daily experience.
We investigate how ongoing sensory context our expectations, what we've seen recently, what surrounds us, our behavioral goals flexibly adjusts sensory representations and the mapping from neuronal activity patterns to conscious perception to stabilize our visual experience amid ever-changing sensory environments.
We use a multi-pronged experimental approach of large-scale neurophysiological recordings, psychophysical studies of perceptual decision making in human and nonhuman primates, and computational modeling to identify how changes in context impact cortical visual processing, ranging across scales from neurons to networks to perception and behavior.
