If you want your cable to connect to your computer and printer together, you need a crossover cable. If you have several computers and a printer, you should buy a switch. All the computers connected to the switch with a straight — through cable and printer should be connected to the switch with a straight-through cable.
Skip to content. What is an Ethernet cable? Straight-through cables are mainly used for connecting non-similar devices while crossover cables are mostly used for connecting similar devices.

That's against common accepted "wisdom". To connect 2 like devices you need to use a cross over cable. That cable swaps the transmit and receive pairs in the network cable. Now as Gerard said on the more "fancy" equipment of that era there was a mid-x switch that would toggle the transmit and receive pairs around simulating a straight through or crossover cable with just a flip of a switch.
Today almost all devices both computers and network gear are auto sensing and will adapt to the cable type and remote device dynamically so this is a yester-decade issue. Thanks, George! Typical Cisco answer that has nothing to do with the modern world, OR they are talking about some funky Cisco-proprietary router behavior.
How old is that test? You would have used the crossover on a PC to Router, if connecting to a configuration port on the router. Maybe this is what they are referring too? For what it's worth, the Base-T standard Gigabit Ethernet does not include a specification for a crossover cable. Why do these certification exams insist on testing you for now- obscure knowledge of obsolete systems? But, if the PC and router do have older Base-T maximum interfaces, the proper fix isn't a crossover cable; it's a new PC or router because the old ones haven't had security updates in ten years or more!
I've been seeing this more and more with cert exams. I understand that there is a viable reason for doing exams this way, but its getting to the point where its probably more effective to start off taking the exam to find out what you need to study, and then study and take the exam again.
A PC and router are both layer 3 devices and so they would require a crossover cable I'm sorry to say this but your statement is inaccurate. The problem is on layer 1 physical only [i. The network layer 3 doesn't give a monkey's butt what the wires look like. This is simply an electrical issue. But I do agree with you that this is totally obsolete knowledge. This type of question should have been removed from all tests a long time ago. Just as a side not to those of you saying this knowledge is useless or obsolete, you couldn't be more wrong.
The reason Cisco wants you to know these details is because they are still out there in service and someone with a CCNA might be hired to do a job where they could potentially run into them. I have been in plenty of closets in the last 5 years that still had gear connected with cross over cables.

Two reasons: Your DSL router probably has an integrated usually 4 port switch those 4 lan ports on the back side Most modern network cards support Auto MDI-X , so they can 'swap' the pin assignment so you can use the "wrong" cable. Improve this answer. It's a router because of its L3 functionality.
It just has an internal switch in the unit for additional connectivity. If you are referring to the situation from back-in-the-day, with less ambiguous devices, and no auto-mdi x as a matter of academic inquiry, as it rarely matters today: In summary: Routers which are hosts and workstations etc require straight-thru cables to connect to switches.
